Tour de Thrift a Fabulous Idea

tourdethrift

Good morning, thrifters! A recent article in the Daily Bee of North Idaho really has me jazzed about spreading the word about this idea – twelve local businesses in North Idaho have banded together to create a one day “Tour de Thrift,” in which shoppers receive special passports that they can fill up at each [...]

Nordstrom Rack becoming a Thrift Store?!

And the difference is what, exactly?

In a move that many branding experts believe to be damaging, Nordstrom Rack has begun selling refurbished, returned items.  As thrift store shoppers, I think we can all relate to the bias they’re receiving as a result of the move. In the insightful article written by Stephanie Landsman of CNBC, one expert refers to the [...]

All Thrifty States

all.thrifty.finalbanner

Yet another thrifty sister who refuses to stay down for the count, Jenna Isaacson has used her creativity to turn the recession into her playground, embarking on a project that I find terrifically inspiring.  All Thrifty States is a cross-country trek to document America through what we give away, and Jenna and her little rented [...]

Wall Street Journal covers thrifty decorating

LIVING ROOM | The Dunbar mosaic tile cocktail table, now worth $18,000, was a $60 flea market prize. Even the Saarinen Tulip table was a deal (no tax, no shipping) online, at circa50.com.

Hello thrifty warriors! This article thrills me not merely for its inspiring (and inspired) content, but also for the fact that the long-revered king of financial newspapers, the Wall Street Journal, is touting the advantages of thrift.  Who woulda thunk it? For all of us who are life-long thrifters, the prices here may seem steep [...]

I’m doing handsprings over this one:  in partnership with Housing Works, New York City has launched “Re-fashioNYC,” a program that will place clothing recycling receptacles in buildings alongside other recycling bins, making it that much easier for us to get our unwanted clothing out of landfills. What’s even better is

Community revitalized through art

idaho.art.lab

I love this little story.  It’s about St. Anthony, Idaho, a town which, like so many across America, has been hit hard by the recession.  The community has banded together to create galleries and thrift/craft shops, and closed storefronts now boast colorful signs that stand in defiance against the economic downturn.

A miracle from Michael purchased for a dime

mj

Sneak peek at soon-to-be breaking news:  a thrift store purchase has made history, yet again.  Michael Jackson’s first costume, a technicolor jacket sewn by his mother and sister and worn by Michael during the Jackson 5′s early TV performances, somehow ended up in a thrift store.

Cadbury Ad Features Dancing Thrift Store Clothes

There’s something so joyful about this. Performance artist Dominic LaCasse (“The Human Flag”) brings thrift store clothing to life… AND it’s an advertisement for chocolate.  Win-win! Cadbury Ad Features Dancing Thrift Store Clothes

Requiring Foster Children to Shop at Thrift Stores

caswell

Well this is a conundrum. Michigan State Senator Bruce Caswell has made a lot of waves with his proposal that basically would require foster children who receive state funding for clothing (a whopping $79) to shop in thrift stores. Full article here:  http://gawker.com/#!5795155/mich-lawmakers-plan-requires-fosters-kids-to-shop-at-thrift-stores I see where the guy is coming from, telling the Michigan public [...]
